Last year, I would’ve never imagined I would be where I am now.
Last year, I was unemployed, lost my ambition, riddled with debt, and felt like I would no longer amount to anything.
I was only 22.
This year, I am working two jobs—with a community project that makes it feel like three— and I have never felt more ambitious.
I am now 23.
What changed within that year to turn my life around?
It came down to one decision: to reinvent myself.
I studied entrepreneurship in college, surrounded myself with student entrepreneurs, and tapped into the entrepreneurship ecosystem in my area. I loved every bit of it.
But near graduation, another calling was lying dormant, something I couldn’t put into words just yet.
I recall being asked multiple times about what I would do after graduation, and there was one time that I actually said what I was thinking.
And it felt natural saying it out loud.
I said I wanted to become a storyteller.
I didn’t know what that meant at the time, nor the steps to achieve such a vague, almost child-like, goal. But it felt right, nonetheless.
Publishing an article about my journey, or lack thereof, after graduation opened my eyes to how I would like to tell stories.
And it’s what I’m working towards now.
I’m incredibly grateful that I was unemployed for 10 months— it delivered the experience I needed.
I’m grateful for where I am now— it’s giving me drive.
It’s only been a year, but so much has changed.
And there’s still so much work to do.
