Building Habits Can Be Scary

I woke up yesterday not wanting to get out of bed because I was too comfortable and I didn’t want to go out in the cold to run. After a few minutes of questioning my purpose and existence altogether, I finally got out of bed and told myself I would only put on my running clothes and go outside for a few seconds, then go back inside. That way, I am creating the habit of at least putting on my running clothes and going out the door every morning.

What was not my plan, however, was actually going out to run.

The second I put on my running shoes and went outside, I felt the urge to start running. It’s scary to think that 15 minutes ago I was reluctant to get out of bed yet here I was running in freezing weather without using much willpower. 

I struggled getting started, but it was smooth sailing once I did.

By the time I finished my morning run, my awareness caught up to me and I realized the events that just unfolded. It was as if it became a habit.

TAKEAWAY: The hardest part is getting started. But once you start and keep going, it gradually gets easier.
