That my identity is small in relation to my role in history.
I see myself not just as an American born to Mexicans, or a Mexican-American living in the United States, but also as a Westerner living in perhaps the wealthiest and most powerful country in history.
And as someone who’s equipped with the knowledge and resources others could only dream of, how could I not give back? I am part of history, and the challenge I set for myself is: what part do I want to have within history? That is, what role would I like to play? And how can I make my corner of the world a bit better for the next generation to pick up where I left off?
I am not belittling my identity, merely reframing it.
