A rule of thumb I live by is to always return the favor. If someone went out of their way to track me down because I dropped something important, then its only right to reward them. Usually the person who extends a hand first isn’t expecting anything in return. So, returning the favor becomes more satisfying when they don’t expect it.
If someone helps you out of kindness, then you’re obligated to return the favor.
But this also applies in the opposite manner.
If someone hurts you out of malice, then you’re also obligated to return the favor.
