I once observed someone sitting across from me at a coffee shop.
He brought out his laptop, accompanied by a pastry and a coffee.
It seemed like he was ready to work.
But as I took a small break from mine and looked up, I noticed he was looking around, distracted and clearly not working at all.
I observed him again minutes later, and this time he had his laptop closed; he was still aimlessly looking around.
I looked for a third time, and he started watching a video on his phone.
How much of this was resistance? Did he do what he was set to do, or did he just want to take a longer break?
Or was the work so intimidating that he pushed it away and distracted himself? Or was he already accomplished in his daily endeavors that he rewarded himself with relaxation?
