The Useless Tree

In an old Chinese story, a carpenter ignores a crooked tree.
It’s useless, he says. Not suitable for wood. Not good for work.

But because it was useless, the tree lived.

Maybe the parts of us that seem useless and unproductive (daydreaming, wandering, taking a nap) aren’t wasteful after all.

Perhaps they’re the very things that keep us alive, free, and human.
